Therapiece summary Ethos

The Therapiece ethos is designed to help participants share thoughts and feelings about their writing and to make positive and useful contributions to others. The ethos should engender support and respect for members. This is based on the following:-

  • Equal time. Every participant will get the same amount of time with which to share their piece.
  • Author in charge. Authors will outline their “contract” at the start of the session, guiding readers in what kind of questions and feedback they welcome.
  • Reflective listening. During each member’s feedback session, a culture of respect is vital. Ask questions based on what you’ve heard rather than commenting. Avoid comforting. Respect others and what they may be experiencing.
  • Non-judgmental contributions. Feedback and questions should avoid judgement and assumption, also avoid life advice, but can include positive reader reactions. Please include a trigger warning at the start of your author time which if your material is likely to cause distress, including topics such as: discrimination, sex, physical or psychological violence.
  • Self-responsibility. To support others, ensure you are well enough to attend the session and able to give your full attention.
